OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETIC BOOKS
HAGGAI: Introduction and Simple Outline

Haggai prophesied in the second year of the reign of Darius Hystaspes, King of Persia, 16 years after Cyrus's decree permitting the rebuilding of the temple, about 520-505 BC (Whitcomb). See Ezra 4:24-6:22.

Compare:
Ezra
4:24-5:1 with Haggai 1:1-11
Ezra 5:2 with Haggai 1:12-15; 2:1-9;
Zech. 1:1-6 Haggai 2:10-23 with Zech. 1:7-21; 2-6
Ezra 5:3-17; 6:1-13 with Zech. 7-8

THEME: TO THE RESTORED REMNANT CONCERNING THE TEMPLE (Lee)

  1. FIRST MESSAGE (Sept. 1):
A stern message of REBUKE 1:1-11
Putting our interests before God's is a grievous sin.
Scarcity is caused by withholding from God that which is rightfully due Him.

  2. SECOND MESSAGE (Sept. 24):
A comforting message of COMMENDATION 1:12-15
    God watches us!
Emphasis here is: Faith is an act of obedience (1 Pet. 1:22-23).

  3. THIRD MESSAGE (Oct. 21):
A cheering message of ENCOURAGEMENT 2:1-9
    God gives and outgives us!

  4. FOURTH MESSAGE (Dec. 24):
    An assuring message concerning
    CLEANSING and
    BLESSING 2:10-19
God restores former blessing when we repent.

  5. FIFTH MESSAGE (Dec. 24):
A steadying message concerning SAFETY 2:20-23
God graciously identifies us with His Son and causes His image to be seen in us.
