OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETIC BOOKS
ZEPHANIAH: Introduction and Simple Outline

NAME: Zephaniah means "hid" or "hidden of Jehovah." Some expositors suggest there is a play on words in 2:3 -- "hid in the day of the LORD'S anger."

DATE: In the earlier part of Josiah's reign. (See chart at close of Jeremiah notes in Appendix.) Whitcomb dates him 635-620 BC.

CONTEMPORARIES: Presumptively Nahum and Jeremiah (earlier ministry).

KEY THOUGHT: Jehovah is "in the midst" and can be depended upon to act in accord with His character.

OUTLINE:

  1. The Day of Jehovah's judgment--"in the midst for judgment"(3:5) 1:1-3:7

  2. The Day of Jehovah's restoration--"in the midst" for deliverance(15, 17) 3:8-20
