INTRODUCTION
Time of
writing
Shortly after the first letter (AD 53; within one year)
Place of
writing
Presumably still at Corinth
Occasion and double purpose of writing
To correct
errors concerning the Day of the Lord.
They thought they were already going through the tribulation (1:4-5), and were
being troubled by false teachings and spurious letters (2:1-2). For the Day of
the Lord see: Daniel 7-9; Revelation 4-19:Isaiah 13; Amos 5; Jude 14-15.
The trouble and judgment of this period, Paul tells them (1:7-10), is not for
His own but His enemies, and will take place on earth when the true Church is
taken home to heaven to be evaluated at the Judgment Seat of Christ (The Day of
Christ, see special note at end of 1 Thessalonians).
In the first epistle, they were troubled concerning their friends who had died,
and Paul instructed that they were to wait while working, being assured
concerning their loved ones.
In the second epistle, they were troubled concerning themselves, thinking they
were in the Day of the Lord. Paul instructs that they were to work while
waiting, being assured concerning themselves.
To correct
their conduct.
Some had quit work--now that the Lord was coming! It was commanded that if they
did not work, they had no right to eat, 3:10.
