Through Jesus Christ, Loves You"

IV. THEREFORE WALK WORTHY 4:1-6:9

PART 1 "The Invitation" - UNITY 4:1-6

I, therefore, one tied together with a ligament (desmois) to the Lord, invite you alongside (parakaleo) to walk around circumspectly (peripateo) in an invitation to folow God's way (axios) with which you have been invited (klesis), with all humility and gentleness, with patience, putting up with one another (anechomai) in God's reconciling love (agape), being diligent (as part of a studied dicipline (spoudazo)) to preserve the oneness (henotes) of the Spirit in the bonds (like ligmanets holding together the joints (sundesmos)) of peace. There is only one (heis) assembly of the membership of Christ's body and only one member of the Godhead who is called alongside us to empower us, just as in the same manner you were invited (klesis) into only one hope of your invitation (klesis), only one Lord God (kurios), only one truth (pistis), only one placing under total subjection of God (baptisma), Only one God and Father of all who is superimposed over all (epi) and is the channel of all action (dia) and has placed himself in a fixed position within all who believe (en).

A. PART 2 - GIFTS 4:7-16

7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8 Therefore it says,

"WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN." 9 (Now this expression, "He ascended," what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

And He gave some as apostles, and some as porphets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the complete furnishing (katartismos) of the growth needs of the saints for fulfilling of the office of servant (keakonea), to the construction of the archetecture (oikodome) of The Body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the full acknowledgement (epignosis) of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the completion of all these things (plermoma), which is Christ.

As a result, we are no longer to be babes, too young to talk (nerios), tossed, like babies are tossed, here and there by waves, and carried about, like babies are carried about, by every by every wind of doctrine, by the fraud (kubia) of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;

but instead speaking the truth in God's reconciling love (agape), we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted like joints held together by ligaments (sumbibazo), according to the effecient energies (energeia) of each individual part, which causes the growth of the complete body, for the builing up of itself in Godly reconciling love (agape).

A. PART 3 - WALK 4:17-32

The mind of the Old Self, The Mind of the Gentile 4:17-19

17 This I say therefore, and affirm together with the Lord, that you no longer walk around (peripateo) just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, thoughts, feelings, will, and understanding (nous), 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, through the channel (dia) of the ignorance that is in them, through the channel (dia) of the brittleness (porosis) of their heart; 19 and they, having become apathetic (apalgeo), have given themselves over to sensuality, for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

The Mind of the Christian 4:20-24

20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, thoughts, feelings, will, and understanding (nous), 24 and put on, like a garment, the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

The Actions of the Christian 4:25-32

25 Therefore,

laying aside falsehood,

"SPEAK TRUTH, EACH ONE" of you, "WITH HIS NEIGHBOR,"

for we are members of one another.

26 "BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN;"

do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity.

28 Let him who steals steal no longer; but rather let him labor, performing with his own hands what is good, in order that he may have something to share with him who has need.

29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

32 And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

B. PART 1 - THEREFORE IMITATE GOD 5:1-14

1 Therefore

be imitators of God, as beloved little children (tekna)

2 and walk around (perepateo) in Godly reconciling love (agape), just as Christ also loved you with Godly reconciling love, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a sweet smelling aroma (euodia osme).

3 But stop leting immorality or any impurity or greed even be named among you, as is proper among saints; 4 and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, ideas, thoughts, motives, or communication (kenos logos), for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the adult responsible sons (uios) of disobedience.

7 Therefore

do not be partakers with them; 8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as little children (tekna) of light 9 (for the plucked fruit (karpos) of the light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10 trying to discern (dokimazo) what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 And do not participate in the deeds of darkness that are barren of fruit (akarpos), but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you."

B. PART 2 - THEREFORE WALK WISELY 5:15-20

15 Therefore

be circumspect, diligent, and perfect (akribos) about how you walk around (perepateto), not as unsophisticated (asophia), but as the sophisticated (sophia), 16 buying you time back out of the market place (exagoridzo), because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

18 And do not let yourselves get out of control as if drunk with wine, for that is unsavedness (asotia), but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;

C. BE SUBJECT TO ONE ANOTHER 5:21-33

and be under the orders or authority (hupotasso) of one another in the respect (phobos) of Christ.

1. WIVES 5:22-24

22 Wives, be under the orders or authority (hupotasso) of your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head (both the authority and the place of first holding (kephale) of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is under the orders or authority (hupotasso) of Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

HUSBANDS 5:25-33

25 Husbands, love with God's reconciational love (agape), your wives, just as Christ also loved with His reconciling love (agape), the church and yielded (paradidomai) Himself up for her; 26 that He might sanctify her, having been made holy by the word of God, applied through submission, enabeling God to deepen the baptism of believers and continue the process of sactification to her, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love with God's reconciling love (agape) their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves with God's reconciling love his own wife loves himself with that same love (agape); 29 for no one ever had no love (miseo) for his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body.

31 "FOR THIS CAUSE A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, AND SHALL CLEAVE TO HIS WIFE; AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH."

32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each individual among you also love with God's reconciliating love (agape) his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect her husband.

CHILDREN 6:1-3

1 Little Children (tekna), be obedient by harkening, listening, and conforming to a command (hupakouo) your parents in the Lord, for this is holy and right (dikaios).

2 "HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER" (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3 "THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH."

FATHERS 6:4

4 And, fathers, do not anger them when alongside (parorgizo) your children to anger alongside you (parorgizo); but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

SLAVES 6:5-8

5 Bond servants (doulos), be obedient by harkening, listening, and conforming to a command (hupakouo) to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ; 6 not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as Bond Servants (doulos) of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. 7 With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men, 8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether Bond Servant (doulos) or free.

6. MASTERS 6:9

9 And, masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

V. BE STRONG WITH THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD 6:10-20

BE STRONG 6:10-14a

10 Finally,

be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes (methods - methodeia) of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers (world leaders - kosmokrator), against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore,

take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

14 Stand firm therefore,

A. WITH (SPOKEN) TRUTH 6:14b

"HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH (spoken - aletheuo) TRUTH," and

B. WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS 6:14c

"HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS," 15 and

C. WITH PREPARATION 6:15

having shod "YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE;"

D. WITH FAITH

16 in addition to all, taking up the shield (large, door-shaped sheild - thureos) of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. 17 And

E. WITH SALVATION 6:17a

take "THE HELMET OF SALVATION," and

F. WITH THE WORD OF GOD 6:17b

the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

WITH PRAYER 6:18-20

18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, 19 and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador (carrier of authority, representative, preacher - presbuteros) in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

VI. THE SALUTATION 6:21-22

21 But that you also may know about my circumstances, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you. 22 And I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts.

VII. THE BENEDICTION 6:23-24

23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with a love incorruptible.
