CHAPTER ONE - The Church As The Body Of Christ

            The Christian Salutation 1:1-2

The Author and His Authorization 1:1a-b

The Addressees and their Addresses 1:1c

The Assets and Their Accreditation 1:2

1 I, Paul, one of Jesus Christ's apostles, through the direct act of God's will,  am writing to those set apart people in Ephesus who are believers in Christ Jesus: 2 grace and peace be to all of you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Divine Composition of the Church 1:3-14 (The Divine Creation of the Church)

3 Let the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be highly acclaimed — Whose favor endowed us by the Spirit with every spiritual asset in the Heavenlies in Christ.

The Major Creation Work of the Father 1:4-6 (The Work of Election by God the Father)

4 He (the Father) did all this in keeping with the fact that He (the Father) selected us for Himself, in Christ, before the foundation of the world — intending us to be in His presence: (the Father's presence) holy and faultless people characterized by Godly love, 5 having predestined us (by God the Father) to be positioned legally as His (the Father's) adult sons to Himself (the Father) through the mediatorial work of Jesus Christ, in line with what pleases His will. (the Father's will) 6 His (the Father's) ultimate purpose is an acclamation of His (the Father's) grace's glory — which He (the Father) lavished on us in the Beloved One.

The Major Creation Work of the Son 1:7-12 (The Work of Redemption by God the Son)

7 We keep on enjoying redemption in Him (the Beloved – Christ) through His blood (Christ's blood) — which involves the dismissal of sins — that He accomplished (the Father accomplished through Christ's blood) in a manner matching the wealth of His grace. (the Father's grace) 8 God (the Father) caused this grace to be ours in abundance, in terms of every kind of insight and practical understanding. 9 This was done by (the Father) making known to us the open sacred secret that expresses His will, (the Father's will) that He (the Father) openly purposed to center in Him (the Son). He (the Father) did this in a manner in keeping with what pleases Him (the Father). 10 He (the Father) will head up all things in Christ, in a dispensation appropriate to the fullness of the ages: administering heavenly affairs and earthly affairs — even in Him (the Son). 11 We also, having been predestined, were made God's portion in Him (in Christ), in keeping with the purpose of the One Who (the Father) executes all things in line with the brilliance of His (the Father's) will. 12 His (the Father's) ultimate purpose is that we should bring acclaim to His (the Father's) glory — we who hoped in Christ first.

The Major Creation Work of the Holy Spirit 1:13-14 (The Work of Sealing by God the Holy Spirit)

13 You too hoped in Him (Christ) when you heard the word of the truth, the good news about your salvation. When you also believed in Him (Christ), you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. 14 He (the promised Holy Spirit) is the guarantor of our inheritance. His (the promised Holy Spirit) indwelling presence will lead to the final release of His (the Father's) purchased possession. This will bring acclaim to His glory. (the Father's glory)

The Church As The Complement to Its Risen Head 1:15-18 (Complementary in its Spiritual Perception)

                        Through Its Spiritual Excietment 1:15-17

                        Through Its Spiritual Enlightenment 1:18

15 On account of this triune blessing, I too, having heard of the faith of you all in the Lord Jesus and you godly love toward all the set apart people, 16 never cease giving thanks for all of you, making mention of you when I pray.17 My desire is that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, would give all of you a spirit of insight and revelation as you gain a clear perception of Him (the Father), 18 and that by having the eyes of your hearts permanently enlightened you might begin to perceive three things: first, what hope there is in His (the Father's) calling; second, what wealth there is in the glory of His (The Father's) portion among the set apart people;

The Church is Complementary in Its Secret Power 1:19-21 (Commentary on its Secret Power)

                        The Power of Endowment 1:19

                        The Power of Example 1:20

                        The Power's Extent 1:21

19 and third, what extraordinary mega-power is available for us believers — relative to the internal operation of the strength of His (the Father's) might. 20 He (the Father) operated this way in the Messiah: first, when He (the Father) raised Him (Christ) from among the dead; second, when He (the Father) seated Him (Christ) on His (the Father's) right hand in the heavenlies, 21 high above every kind of rule, authority, power, lordship, and every title that is named not only in this age but in the one to about to come.

The Church is Complementary in Its Supply from His Fullness 1:22-23 (Complementary in its Sovereign Resources)

                        His Cosmic Headship 1:22a

                        His Church Headship 1:22b

                        His Care in Headship 1:23

22 Third, when He (the Father) subordinated every thing under His (Christ's) feet. Fourth, when He (the Father) established Him (Christ), and no other, as Head over all things to the Church. 23 The Church is His (Christ's) Body — the fullness of the One (Christ) Who (Christ) constantly fills these total blessings in all members.

CHAPTER TWO - The Church As The Temple Of Christ
            The Temple Architecture 2:1-10

The Raw Materials Used 2:1-3

The Raw Materials Were Spiritually Dead People 2:1

The Raw Materials Were Spiritually Disobedient People 2:2

The Raw Materials Were Spiritually Desirous People 2:3
1
You all were also long dead spiritually because of your deviations and sins. 2 You formerly walked around in them: in conformity with the evil operation of this world's system, in conformity with the authority of the prince of this lower sphere, whose spirit now tenaciously drives those who are disobedient. 3 We too were all formerly numbered among them. We conducted ourselves by habit, doing the cravings of our flesh and our evil thoughts. We were by nature children destined for wrath, even as the rest of mankind is.

            The Reproduction Work Done 2:4-10

The Contractor Building the Temple is God 2:4-5

God Works Out of His Wealth 2:4

God Works Out of His Power 2:5

The Construction Work on the Temple is Great 2:6-7

                                    The Work is Elevating 2:6

                                    The Work is Excelling 2:7

The Contract for the Work is Guaranteed 2:8-10

                                    Guaranteed by Grace 2:8

Guaranteed But Not to Be By Any Works 2:9

Guaranteed by A New Creation 2:10

4 On the other hand, since God is wealthy in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were spiritually long dead persons because of those deviations, God made us spiritually alive together with Christ — by grace you now stand in a saved condition — 6 and He raised us up together spiritually with Christ and seated us together spiritually in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. 7 His purpose was that in the coming ages He might demonstrate the excelling wealth of His grace — shown in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you now stand in a saved condition through faith, and this salvation did not originate with you; it is God's free gift. 9 This salvation was not derived from human works, so that no person may boast. 10 For we are His and no other's masterpiece, having been created by Christ Jesus to do the really good works that God prepared earlier, purposing that we should be occupied with them.

                The Temple Appointments 2:11-18

                        A Study in Contrasts 2:11-12

                                    The Ceremonial Aspects 2:11

                                    The Covenant Aspects 2:12

                        A Study in Combinations 2:13-18

                                    One New Mediation 2:14a

                                    One New Grouping 2:14b

                                    One New Mankind 2:15

                                    One New Body 2:16

                                    One New Proclamation 2:17

                                    One New Access 1:18
11 For which reason, keep in mind that you were formerly Gentiles in terms of the flesh, being called uncircumcision by those called circumcision: made by hands in the flesh, 12 because in that season you were separated from Messiah, excluded from Israel's State, and ignorant of the covenants based upon the promise, not possessing any hope, and without God's help in the world-system. 13 But right now, in Messiah Jesus, you who were formerly far away have been brought near by the blood of Messiah. 14 For He, and no other, is our peace. He made both categories one organism and having in His crucified flesh dissolved the hostility, that is, having broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having rendered inoperative the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, He purposed by this action to create the two parties into one new mankind, in Himself — thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one Body by means of the cross, having slain the hostility upon it. 17 And having come He proclaimed peace to you who were afar off and peace to those who were near, 18 because through His action we both are enjoying perpetual access by one Spirit to the Father.

                The Temple Appearance 2:19-22

It Is A Secure Temple 2:19

It Is A Substantial Temple 2:20

                        It Is A Set-Apart Temple 2:21

It Is A Spiritual Temple 2:22
19 So then you Gentiles are no longer strangers or outsiders, but fellow citizens of those who are set apart and the immediate family of God. 20 You have been built up on the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, of which Jesus Christ is the head cornerstone. 21 In Christ the whole building, harmoniously fitted together, keeps on growing into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 You too, in Christ, are being built together into a dwelling of God by the Spirit.

CHAPTER THREE - The Church As God's Top Secret
The Description of the Original Gift of the Secret 3:1-5

The Description is Related to a Special People 3:1

The Description is Related to a Special Dispensation 3:2

The Description is Related to a Special Revelation 3:3

The Description is Related to Christ's Special Secret 3:4

The Description is Related to the Spirit's Contemporary Ministry 3:5

1 By reason of this new creation I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the benefit of you Gentiles. 2 You certainly have heard about the dispensation springing from the grace of God that was given to me with you in mind. 3 That this secret was made known to me by revelation as I wrote briefly above. 4 So when you read it you can perceive my insight into Christ's special secret. 5 This secret was not made known to the sons of men in other generations, al it has been revealed by the Spirit just now, in this generation, to His set apart apostles and prophets.

Definition of the Revealed Secret 3:6-13

The Secret is the Promise in Christ Through the Good News 3:6

The Secret is an Operation of Grace and Power that Includes the Gentiles 3:7-8

The Secret is to be Dispensed Now that it has been Revealed 3:9-12

The Secret is on Trial that its Benefits may Display its Brilliance 3:13
6
The secret is this — the Gentiles are to be fellow heirs, fellow members of the Body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the good news. 7 I was made an administrator of this good news in accord with the gift springing from God's grace. This gift was given to me to correspond with the internal operation of His power. 8 This special grace was given to me, the very least all the set apart ones. It was given: first, to proclaim to the Gentiles the good news about the untrackable wealth of Christ. 9 Second, to inform all men as to what the dispensation of this secret is, which stood hidden from the people of the ages in God — Who created all things. 10 God's ultimate purpose in this is that the colorful spectrum of God's wisdom might be made known to the governments and the authorities in the heavenly places through the agency of the Church. 11 This is compatible with the purpose for the ages which He designed and has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 We are enjoying freedom of speech and confident access to God in Him through His faithfulness. 13 This is the reason I am asking you not to lose heart over my trials on your behalf, seeing they are in your honor.

14 For this cause I bend my knees toward the Father, 15 from Whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. 16 I pray that He might cause you all to be strengthened with power by means of His Spirit's operation in the inner man — all in a manner equal to the wealth of His glory — 17 so that Christ may develop His home in your hearts through faith, as you stand rooted and grounded in godly love. 18 The purpose is: first, that you, with all set apart people, might be strong enough to grasp for yourself what is the breadth, length, depth, and height. 19 Second, that you all might come to experience the knowledge-excelling love of Christ for us. Third, that you all might be filled up to all the fullness God provides. 20 Now to Him Who is able to work in a way that is beyond all measurement, even far beyond everything we ask or consider asking, in keeping with His power which operates among us, 21 to Him be the glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus into all the generations of eternity. Amen!

CHAPTER FOUR - The Church As The New Mankind

The Coordination of the Church 4:1-6

The Problem of a Godly Walk 4:1

The Problem of a Godly Love 4:2

The Problem of the Unity of the Spirit 4:3

                        The Provisions for Coordination 4:4-6
1
I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to live your life in a manner worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all possible humility of mind and gentleness, with stretched out spirit, putting up with another in godly love. 3 Be diligent to preserve t e oneness of the Spirit in the bond that consists of peace. 4 There is one Body and one Spirit, just as you were all called with the one hope that belongs to your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, bone God and Father of all, Who is over all and through all and in all. 6 One God and Father of all, Who is over all and through all and in all.

The Corporateness of the New Mankind 4:7-16

                        The Rightful Giver 4:7-10

                        The Right Gifts 4:11
7 But, in addition, grace was given to each one of us in accord with the measure of Christ's gift. 8 It is for this reason He says, When He ascended into the height He led a host of prisoners captive, He gave gifts to men. 9 (But what does 'He ascended' imply? Nothing other than He also previously descended into the lower regions, which are the earth? 10 He Himself, Who descended, is also the One Who ascended far above all the heavens, with the purpose of filling all things.) 11 And it is He Himself that gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastor and teachers.

            The Church's Given Goals 4:12-16

Goal One: Teaching The Team To Serve 4:12-13

Goal Two: Training The Team For Stature 4:4-15

Goal Three: Toning Up The Team For Spirituality 4:16

12 The first purpose of this is to equip those who are set apart to do the work of serving, with the building up of the Body of Christ as the goal. 13 This is to go on until we all arrive experientially: first, at the unity produced by the faith and at a thorough experiential knowledge of the Son of God; second, at a complete mankind; third, at our proportion to the stature of Christ's fullness. 14 The ultimate purpose is that we may no longer be mere babes, constantly storm-tossed and borne about by every wind of teaching perpetrated by the trickery of men using this cleverness to further the teaching techniques of error. 15 Instead, dealing truthfully in godly love, grow up into Him Who is the Head, namely Christ. 16 The whole Body causes its own maturing by His means with the purpose of building itself up in godly love, because it is harmoniously framed together and held together by means of the rich provision from every joint in keeping with the proportionate operation of each individual part.

Solving The Problems Between The Old and New Men

Defining Communications of the Church 4:17-32 – (The Communications of the New Mankind)

                        The Negative Experience 4:17-21

                        The Negative Nature 4:22

                        The Positive Nature 4:23-24

17 I say this, therefore, and testify in the Lord: you also are to be living your lives no longer as the Gentiles are theirs, with their minds fixed on futile things. 18 Their minds are in a darkened condition so they stand alienated from the life that concerns itself with God. This was caused by two things: first, the willful ignorance that is in them; second, the insensitiveness of their hearts. 19 Such people, because they are in the condition of being past feeling, have given themselves up to outrageous conduct in order to pursue all kinds of impure activities. 20 But you have not come to learn Christ in this manner. 21 Since it was Him you heard and you were taught in Him, just as the truth is in Jesus — 22 to once for all put away from yourselves your edition of the ancient man (that characterized your former manner of life) which is constantly being corrupted in accord with the cravings that proceed from deceit. 23 Instead, be renewed constantly in the disposition of your minds, 24 and for your own benefit put on your edition of the new man created in accord with God's standards in the sphere of true righteousness and holiness.

Solving The Problems Between Truth and Error In Life
                            The Positive Experience 4:25-32

                                    Spoken Truth 4:25

                                    Sinless Anger 4:26

                                    Stopping the Devil 4:27

                                    Start Working Hard 4:28

                                    Season The Saints 4:29

                                    Stop Grieving The Spirit 4:30-31

                                    Standard of Forgiveness 4:32

25 Wherefore, having put away from yourselves falsehood, each one of you keep speaking the truth with his neighbor because we are a part of each other. 26 Let yourself be angry and yet don't let yourself sin: do not let the sun set upon your exasperation, 27 neither give the devil an opportunity. 28 Let him who steals steal no more, but rather let him be toiling hard, working the good thing with his own hands, that he might possess something to give to one having a need. 29 Do not let any worthless word proceed out of your mouth, but instead say only what is good for building up where there exists a case of need, in order that it might give grace to those who hear. 30 And stop grieving the Holy Spirit of God by Whom you all were sealed with a view to the day of final redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, passion, wrath, clamoring, and blasphemy be put away at once from all of you, together with every kind of spite. 32 Come to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, as graciously forgiving each other as God also forgave you in Christ.

CHAPTER FIVE - The Church As The Bride Of Christ
The Spiritual Engagement of the Bride 5:1-17

The Bridal Walk in a New Love 5:1-2

The Bridal Walk in a New Light 5:3-14

The Bridal Walk in a New Life 5:15-17
1
Therefore, in your status as beloved children, get to be doers of what you see God do. 2 And maintain a walk in godly love, just as Christ also loved us and delivered Himself up to God for our benefit as an offering and a sacrifice for a sweet-smelling fragrance. 3 But fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, do not let it be mentioned among you, as is fitting for people who are set apart. 4 This includes obscenity and foolish talking or jesting, things which are not appropriate, instead give thanks. 5 For you all should recognize this fact: no fornicator or unclean person or coveter, which is idolatry, possesses an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Do not let any person deceive you with meaningless words, for because of these things the wrath of God keeps coming on the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore, do not become their partners. 8 The first reason is, you all were formerly identified with moral darkness but now you are identified with spiritual light in the Lord. Behave yourselves as children characterized by spiritual light. 9 The second reason is, the fruit of the spiritual light consists in all kinds of goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10 This spiritual fruit is accredited evidence of what pleases the Lord well. 11 Stop sharing fellowship with the unfruitful works of the moral darkness, instead even practice exposing them. 12 The third reason, it is disgraceful even to talk about the things they do in secret. 13 But when all these things are exposed by this spiritual light, only then are they made visible. 14 The explanation is everything that gets revealed is spiritual light. Consequently the scripture says: Wake right up, sleeping ones, And rise right up from among those who are spiritually dead,  And Christ will shine upon you.15 Therefore, take heed how clearly you behave yourselves, not as unwise people but as wise. 16 Keep buying up your opportunity, because the days are deadly evil. 17 Because of this, stop being unwise, instead understand what the Lord's will is.

The Experiences of the Bride 5:18-26

The Filling by God the Holy Spirit 5:18

The Flow from God the Holy Spirit's Filling 5:19-20

The Filling of the Christian Marriage 5:21-26

                                    The Functioning Principle 5:21

The Principle Function in Wives and Husbands 5:22-26
18 And stop getting drunk with wine, in which is an unsaved kind of living, rather allow yourselves to be filled constantly by the Spirit. 19 Let these be the characteristics of your filling: first, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; second, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord; 20 third, giving thanks always, for everything, to our God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 fourth, practicing submitting yourselves to one another with respect for Christ. 22 For example, the wives are to keep submitting themselves to their own husbands as to the Lord, 23 because the husband is the head of the wife as Christ also is the Head of the Church, since He Himself is the Savior of the Body. 24 Nevertheless as the Church submits herself to Christ, this is how the wives are to be submissive to their husbands in everything. 25 You husbands keep on loving your wives in a godly manner, just as Christ loved the Church and delivered Himself up for her benefit. 26 His purpose is to set her apart, having cleansed her by the bath of water, consisting of the Word.

The Expectations of the Bride 5:27-33

                        Expectation of Her Glory 5:27

                        Expectation in Her Groom 5:28-31

                        Expectation of Her Greatness 5:32-33
27 It is His personal purpose to present the Church to Himself as glorious, not having a spot or wrinkle or any of such things, but that it should be holy and blameless. 28 So also husbands are obligated to love their wives in a godly manner, as they would their own bodies. He who loves His wife in this manner is really loving himself, 29 for no one ever hated his own body, on the contrary he nourishes it and cherishes it, just as Christ does with the Church, 30 because we are members of His Body. 31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother behind, and shall be faithfully devoted to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a secret of great magnitude, but I am talking principally about Christ and about the Church. 33 Nonetheless let each husband also personally love his own wife in a godly manner, as he does himself, and let his wife respect her husband.

CHAPTER SIX - The Church As The Army Of Christ
The Roles Planned in His Army 6:1-9

The Church Army's Order for its Families 6:1-4

The Church Army's Order for its Workers 6:6-9
1
Children, make a habit of obeying your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 'Honor your father and mother,' for this is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may be well with each one of you and so that you may live a long time upon the earth. 4 Fathers, stop provoking your children to anger. Rather, develop them by the training and preventative caution the Lord approves of. 5 You who are in the bondservice role, give obedience to your masters in terms of the sphere of the flesh. Give it with fear and trembling. Give it with singleness of heart, as to Christ. 6 Do not give it with eye service, as men pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing God's will from the heart. 7 Make a habit of serving with a ready good will, as to the Lord and not to men, 8 because you are aware that whatever good thing each man does, that he will get back from the Lord, whether he be a bondman or a freeman. 9 Masters, also, practice the same toward bondservants. Give up threatening since you are aware that the Lord is in the heavens, and there is no partiality with Him.

The Church's Opposition Identified 6:10-12 – (The Army is Opposed by Satan)

Soldiers Must Be Raised Up and Made Spiritually Strong 6:10

Soldiers Must Make A Spiritual Stand As An Army 6:11

Soldiers Must Stand Spiritually Sharp As An Army 6:12
10 Finally, allow the Lord to empower you constantly in Himself with the full force of His strength. 11 Put on the complete armor that God provides so that you may be able to stand successfully against the strategies of the devil. 12 This is necessary because our wrestling match is not with flesh and blood. It is rather with the rulers, with the authorities, with the world-rulers of this spiritual darkness, with the deadly evil spiritual forces in the heavenly places.

The Church's Offense Indicated 6:13-18 (The Army Has Its Own Offense to Mount) – (The Church's Call to Spiritual Arms)
13 On account of this confrontation, take up the complete armor God provides so that you might have the capacity to withstand in the evil day, and having done all necessary things to stand firm. 14 Stand firm then, belted about your waist with truth and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with readiness to go with the good news about peace. 16 In addition to these three, when you have taken up the shield, which is the faith. you will be equipped to extinguish all the blazing arrows of the wicked one. 17 Take up, also, salvation's helmet, and the Spirit's sword, which is the spoken Word of God. 18 Throughout the entire contest pray through the Spirit in all seasons with all prayer and petition. With respect to this praying watch persistently, praying for all the other soldiers.

The Church's Oversight Included 6:19-24 – (The Army Must Recognize Its Oversight)

Oversight at the Apostolic Level 6:19-20

Oversight at the Sub Apostolic Level 6:21-22

Oversight at the Supportive Level 6:23-24
19 Pray on my behalf also that when I open my mouth, He might give me the opportunity for a message so that I may fearlessly make known the open sacred secret springing from the good news. 20 It is on behalf of this that I am ambassador in a chain, so that I may speak boldly about that secret, as I must. 21 Now Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful bondservant in the Lord, will make known everything about how I am faring in order that you may know the events that have happened to me. 22 I sent him to you for this very purpose that you might come to know these things about us and that he might encourage your hearts. 23 Peace and godly love, along with faith, be to the brothers from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 May this grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in [His] immortality.

"This simple translation is provided by the author to save the study time of the busy reader and better equip him to prepare his presentation of the "Word of the truth of the good news" Eph 1:13. We have provided a translation of the Koinee Greek text of Ephesians that is, we think, distinguished by its designed slant toward basic exegesis. It intends that a smooth reading style might at times be sacrificed for greater literary accuracy and for the greater prominence of contexts. This makes it a study translation. While Wuest calls his an expanded translation, this is both an expanded and an exegetical or even an expository translation.

If accusations of interpretation arise, it must be said there is no such thing as a non-interpretive translation. We hope all of our alleged biases are clearly stated without apology so that readers may make their own evaluations, under the Holy Spirit and the correlated Word of God without the leverage of questionably intentioned side swipes."
