Ephesians 5 The Commentary, Part 2

(5:18) The Manner of Subjection

And do not get drunk with wine,

(5:17's message) Don't act as if there is No Will of God, and don't act as if there is No Power of God.

It is a shame that so many have lost the message of this verse by concentrating on the problem of drunkenness or alcohol addiction. These are clearly problems in Paul's and our own society. But this not the message of the verse. This first clause could be written about any abiding sin that fills up our life and our every waking moment with something besides the Holy Spirit of God's filling.

for that is dissipation,

dissipation is the very act or condition of wasteful expenditure or consumption. A more modern phrase would be "wasted," a term from the drug culture that denotes a person who is so clouded by the drug that they have not other value. At the time of translation this word would carry the meaning of and "amusement" or "diversion."

but be filled with the Spirit,

Here is the force of the statement. YOU, be FILLED with the SPIRIT of GOD!

That is a matter of the will. There is only one path for the believer to be filled with the Spirit of God – That path is to learn how to continually lay aside our own self will for His will. In the FILLED Christian, there is little or no evidence of self will.

We must always ask, "What shall I do now Lord?" Where shall I go now Lord?" It is a place in the mind and will where we take a stand and say, "Lord, I am totally available to your will right now." I make myself totally available in mind, body, and will. Not in just the saying, not in just the display of activity, but at every moment of God given life.

(5:19) The Evidences of the Spirit Filled Life

speaking to one another

Evidence Number One – Speaking to one another. So much of our time is spent avoiding one another. Or if we do speak it is with hardness, coarseness, or sarcasm.

in

The list that follows is a list that (if we are filled) we will find ourselves IN these things. Not doing them because it is right to do them, but it will be a part of our most basic selves. We will be IN them.

psalms and

hymns and

spiritual songs,

singing and

making melody with your heart to the Lord;

"Making melody with your heart TO THE LORD." The aim of such a manner of life is not to please others, even though they will be pleased. It is to Please HIM. Living in such a way that our heart naturally sings in psalms and hymns, etc., is only possible by Supernatural power, and that only comes by allowing the Holy Spirit of God complete control over your life. You can not do this on your own – you can only produce a counterfeit spirituality and joy.

(5:20)

always giving thanks for

all things

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;

It is so very often that we hear of our responsibility to give thanks for everything. This is not the object of this verse. Yes we should give thanks for everything – but this verse teaches that giving continual thanks for every good and bad thing that comes into our lives IS THE RESULT OF BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT – not a way to be filled with the Spirit.

(5:21)

and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Ah, Ha. The CATCH to it all. Being filled with the Spirit of God RESULTS in BEING SUBJECT TO ONE ANOTHER, AS WE LOVE CHRIST.

Being SUBJECT to ONE ANOTHER is the message till the end of the chapter. The program of God is to first show us WHAT WE HAVE IN-CHRIST (Ch 1), then show us WHY WE HAVE IT (Ch 2-3), and then WALK WORTHY OF OUR CALLING (Ch 4-6)

Paul now leads us into the depths of WALKING WORTHY. How to WALK WORTHY in our FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS.

Paul now says, "Now that you are possessed by the Holy Spirit of God – Be Filled with Him Also and THIS is HOW to do it."
