THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
Chapter 1:9-13
"The World knew Him not"

The Visualized Text

1:9 There was the true light which,
coming into the world,
enlightens every man.

1:10 He was in the world, and
the world was made through Him, and,
the world did not know Him.

1:11 He came to His own, and
those who were
His own did not receive Him.

1:12 But
as many as received Him,
to
them
He gave the right to become
children of God,
even to those who believe in His name:

1:13 who were born not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh,
nor of the will of man,
but of God.

Translations and Paraphrases

KJV
{9} <That> was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. {10} He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. {11} He came unto his own, and his own received him not. {12} But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, <even> to them that believe on his name: {13} Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

New International
{9} The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.  {10} He was in the world, and through the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  {11} He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  {12} Yet to all who he gave the right to become children of God -- {13} children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision, or a husband's will, but born of God.

He, the aforementioned Word, was the light, the genuine light which enlightens spiritually every man as it comes into the universe.  In the universe He was, and the universe through His intermediate agency came into existence, and the world of sinners did not have a experiential knowledge of Him.  Into the midst of His own possessions He came, and His uniquely-owned people did not take Him to themselves.  But as many as appropriated Him, He gave to them a legal right to become born-ones of God, to those who place their trust in His name, who, not out of a source of bloods, nor even out of a desire of the flesh, nor even out of the desire of a male individual, but out of God were born.

Class Translation:
1:9
This one, who was “the one who is the true enlightenment,” (which enlightens all of mankind), He is being brought into the world system.

This one, who was coming (Present middle voice), translates as the one who was in the process of coming. The same is true for the word enlightening, translates as the one who was in the process of enlightening. As all things in our physical world everything is a process, it all takes certain amounts of time. Even those things we think of as taking place in an instant... take a certain amount of time to happen. We live in a process world. The text makes this clear. The one who would come would take time... 30 years to mature, and an additional 3 years to minister. His condemnation would take time, His torture would take time, His death would take time. That time was very real for Him and for those who witnessed the steps of the process of our Lord to accomplish our salvation. In this verse we also run into the word Kosmos (often translated as just "world," but oh so much more. All that was created by Him (and for Him) was put into place so that He might come and minister to men and women - in order that some might be saved and become His  brothers and sisters - both now and for all eternity.

1:10
He was already being in the world system, and that world system He Himself made (genesis-ed), and that world system did not know Him experientially.

These words ring true today - Jesus Christ is present in us who believe. He is here in our world, but this world around us (for the most part) does not know He's here and seeking their salvation. For many He is just a religious name from the past that was a part of a world religion system that went wrong ages ago and persecuted and killed many for all the wrong reasons. The message of the Christ continually gets lost in the echoes of the past. For others, the message of the Gospel is lost in the "Anything but God" attitudes of the lost. In John's world, the Christ had been born only 6 months after he had been born. The ministry of the Christ of God was about to begin as Jesus became into His adult ministry at 30 years of Age. The carpenter Rabbi would soon reveal Himself as Jesus, the very Son of God who came to save those who would have Him as their Savior - but... the world knew Him not.

1:11
He came to (into) those who were His own, but, those who were His own did not partner alongside with Him.

Jesus' prime mission was to come to the House of Israel and bring them salvation. To save them from their sins, and to offer them the long promised Kingdom of God on earth - but their leadership, and those who followed them, rejected Him. The Greek word that we often translate as "receive" (as in they did not receive Him) literally means that "they did not take Him unto themselves."

1:12 whoever received Him received His authority. They were “believers in His Name.” and became “Children of God.”

There's the word "received" again. The text clearly says that "whoever took Him unto themself" received His authority. The word authority is the same word used in the description of the "Right" of husbands and wives over each other's bodies. A mutual authority - we become one with Him. We literally become "Children of God" by taking Him unto ourselves (believing God, making Him our God).

1:13
These ones came
not out of nationalism, family, tribes, etc,
nor out of the will of their flesh (lusts)
nor out of the will of Men’s systems, but
Out of God were born, begotten, generated.

"Thes ones," those who take Him unto themselves, set themselves apart from nation, family, tribe, lust of the flesh, men's systems, etc., but take Him unto themselves only to be Born of God, begotten by the Power of God, Through the Holy Spirit, into the family of God.

NOTES:

"The Greek word Kosmos means order, arrangement, and so, with the Greeks, beauty; for order and arrangement, in the sense of system, are at the bottom of the Greek conception of beauty.  Sometimes Kosmos means earth.  When the word is employed in the New Testament for humanity, the world of men, it denotes organized humanity -- humanity in families, tribes, nations.  The Greek word for chaotic, unorganized humanity -- the mere mass of men -- is thalassa, the "sea" of men.

When used in a bad ethical sense.  In the sense of the present world system, the ethically bad sense of the world refers to the order or arrangement under which Satan has organized the role of unbelieving mankind upon his cosmic principles of force, greed, selfishness, ambition, and pleasure.  This world system is imposing and powerful with military might; is often outwardly religious, scientific, cultured, and elegant; but, seething with national and commercial rivalries and ambitions, is upheld in any real crisis only by armed force, and is dominated by satanic principles." VERSE  :9

John 3:17-21
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. {18} He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. {19} And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. {20} For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. {21} But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
