The various orders of angels
Some
of the angels sinned and God cast them down from heaven, 2 Pet.
2:4.
Thus angels are not now all the same. Now they are of different kinds.
Suggested classification of angels
Un-fallen angels
"Living creatures" (cherubim and seraphim, who covered the mercy seat in the temple and the tabernacle). These three may be different terms for the same order or class of beings and positions of authority. Nearest to God.
Archangels
(1) Michael - has a special relationship to Israel, Dan. 12.1,
"the prince for his people. " In Revelation 12, we
have him casting Satan out of heaven.
(2) Gabriel - is the messenger angel of the Scriptures. He is
not called- archangel but is given as prominent a place as Michael
to bring messages of great importance to men.
Principalities and powers, Eph. 6:12; 3:10; Col. 1:16
General
body of un-fallen angels
The rest of the angels not already mentioned. These are like
privates in the "armies" of angels. Observe the earlier
note on "The Angel of Jehovah" under the doctrine
of the Trinity.
Fallen angels
Unbound
fallen angels
(1) Satan, Isa. 14:12-14
(2) Principalities and powers -- world rulers of this darkness,
Eph. 6:12; e.g., the prince of the kingdom of Persia, Dan. 10:13
(3) General body of fallen angels (unbound) -- DEMONS
Bound
fallen angels
Those who are kept in chains until the judgment, Jude 6.
